My photography blog here is intended to complement my painting blog - you may see some photos that you recognize as paintings, and vice versa...go ahead, see if you can find them!
She couldn't wait for summer...and she really couldn't wait for the pool. When she found out that we were the only ones at the pool, she couldn't resist.....
If you look closely, the "tire tracks" across this leaf are actually shadows from the fronds of a fern that was growing above it. I was intruiged by the patterns the fern made, and the abstract quality it created. Found in NH, near Cardigan Mountain.
I can find one every day in my life...if I look for one. I have hundreds pressed in my books...someone is trying to tell me something (usually it's my dad telling me to play the lottery!)
We have a tradition of visiting Nubble LIght in York each time we go to Wells (which includes a visit also to the Goldenrod taffy store and Bill and Bob's silver store)- the tidal pools here are like mirrors with great surprises beneath the surface.
We often have a full force storm that will come through Wells Beach in the afternoon, enveloping the beach and creating great reflective puddles in the streets.
I often get up early (with no alarm clocK) at Wells Beach, just in time to catch the beautiful sunrises off Kennebunkport, with amazing colors and cool ocean air.
the architecture in New England is well represented from Maine to Cape Cod by the shingled cottage. These are seen from the cottage that we rent in Wells Beach each summer.
My girls and I enjoyed a beautiful beach day, ferry ride and ice cream on Block Island this summer. A beautiful island with a nice, laid back environment.
The water that leads through Elm Bank has many personalities, depending on the season, the sun and the weather. On this cold but clear February day, it looked dark and inviting...and cold.
My students and enjoy setting up the sap buckets on local maples for sugaring at our local organic farm. Elm Bank in Natick is the perfect place to spend a morning in the snow and sun prepping the trees.
The crystals of ice were on everything this day...and the backlight from the sun made these high bush cranberries glow in the sunlight at the local organic farm.
Amazing crystals of ice formed on the very cold wire fence at the Organic Farm this past winter. I'm glad I could focus well to show the leafy structures.
Because the sun comes up on the other side of the waterfall, I am always treated to a beautiful display of rays through the trees, especially after a nice snow the night before.
I have to admit that I have to work HARD at trying to come up with clever photos (AND clever names)...I happened to look up as I was standing under the clothesline in Maine and loved this perspective...each clip waiting to be used like soldiers...
I've gone back into my archives looking for some favorites..and this is one of them! I couldn't believe HOW sparkly and beautiful the tower was at night...if only I could have caught the flashing lights all around it...it sparkled!
I love this time of year, even before the trees have turned their full colors. I took this photo as I drove home from school, loving the clean reflections and clear fall skies.
Last spring I went on the Freedom trail in Boston for the first time, as was taken to a very old cemetery along the way. Needless to say, while the headstones and names were historical and old, I found a great photo above, in the reflection of an old building covered with ivy.
Not being from a city myself, I really find any visit into Boston (or pretty much any other city, for that matter) and huge treat. I happened to catch the greenway at night where the southeast expressway used to be. I can't get over how quiet it is now downtown.
Well, I certainly paint shadows enough, and that's probably because I've taken photos of them too....they're always an amazing shade of ANYTHING but grey!
I had to take a large series of photos to be able to capture this great cloud which changed shape and color so rapidly. What a beautiful morning on Wells beach (Summer 2007).
Being from Maine, I can never tire of a typical Maine view such as a red fishing shack on the coast. THis photo was taken last winter on the way out to Land's End (the real one) on Bailey's Island.
I am fortunate to teach in a beautiful brick building with this cupola on top. And on a sunny winter day with a bright winter sky, the half moon stands out against the lit yellow monument.
I've been a painter my whole life.... I just didn't know it. Luckily, I've been using photography as an extension of a life-long desire to capture what I see, now I can do it in 2 mediums. I couldn't tell you which came first, the desire to paint or photography, but, does it really matter?
Please feel free to browse my other medium, primarly in watercolor, at www.paintedpaperbyholly.blogspot.com
Feedback is always appreciated!
